82 Year Old Woman Dies in High-rise Fire

Posted: 3/11/2014

A fire in a Manhattan high-rise building killed an elderly woman this morning at 4:30am.

Firefighters responded to the fire quickly.  They extinguished it and found Gloria Hillman unconcious.  They performed CPR, but it was too late.

The building superintendent, Ramon Vargas explained his loss, "Very hurt, very hurt.  I've known her for over 35 years, very nice lady."

Another resident said, "I used to see her every morning as I left to go to school.  She would always ask me how was school, if I was working, how I was doing in life.  It's just tragic."

The fire was contained in  Hillman's apartment and no other injuries were reported.  Hillman lived with her 23 year old grandson who was not home at the time of the fire.

The elderly are at special risk of being injured or dying in a fire; in addition, high-rise fires are much more difficult to fight.  Fire sprinklers are recommended for high-rise buildings.  Additionally, when senior citizens are searching for a home, they should find a home that has fire sprinklers installed.
