Yuma, AZ -- The Yuma Fire Department received a water flow alarm and responded to find the fire sprinkler had already nearly extinguished the fire before they arrived.
Firefighters then went to work extinguishing some lingering hot spots and stayed to make sure they fire was completely out. The only damage was to a display case with wooden dividers.
The building is in the middle of a remodel. During the day, lacquer finsihing was applied and the oil rags were not disposed of properly. It is suspected that this is the cause of the fire.
Spokesperson Mike Erfert said, "Even small fires can cause significant damage to property and endanger those nearby. Contrary to many Hollywood portrayals, only sprinkler heads directly exposed to heat activate, not those in the rest of the room, building, or complex. Sprinkler systems save lives and protect property."
