The South Dakota Fire Deaths Turned Out to be a Murder, Suicide
Platte, SD -- Authorities believe that the residential fire where six family members were found dead was actually a murder, suicide.
Preliminary autopsy results show that all six family members died of shotgun wounds before the fire. The bodies of Scott and Nicole Westerhuis and their four children were found in the burned ruins of their family home.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said investigators believe Scott fired all of the deadly shots.
"It's hard for us to determine exactly if he started the fire, but that's the only thing that makes sense," said Jackley's spokesperson.
