Alberta is setting aside $70M on fire sprinklers for senior living facilities following the tragic fire in Quebec that killed 32 residents. These funds are part of a bigger plan to eventually equip all 24,000 government owned senior living facilities with fire sprinklers.
The majority of senior facilities in Alberta do not have fire sprinklers - almost 70%. They were built prior to 1990 and were not mandated to have fire sprinklers. It is estimated that to equip every facility in need of fire sprinklers with the proper protection, it would cost $250 million.
"With $70 million dollars, 70% of seniors that don't have sprinklers and adequate fire safety will be left out," said David Eggen, NDP Seniors critic.
