MU Frats Ask for More Time to Install Fire Sprinklers
Columbia, MO -- Two University of Missouri Fraternities have asked for an extension on installing their fire sprinklers.
Following a fire at the University of Missouri that killed a student, in 2009 the city put a new law into effect, stating all fraternities and sororities need to have fire sprinklers. That year, six Greek houses asked for extensions to install fire sprinklers until March 16, 2016. Now, two of those fraternities are asking for another extension.
Delta Tau Delta is working to raise $3 million to build a new house. For this reason, the fraternity wants to postpone the fire sprinkler requirement. They plan on demolishing their current residence next spring.
"The house is 55 years old, I think, and a little outdated," said Delta Tau Delta House corp President Breck Anderson. "The maintenance of keeping that house up is going to be far more expensive over the next 15-20 years than building a new one."
Installing a new fire sprinkler in the house would cost - according to Delta Tau Delta - $150-300k. They don't see it being necessary when they will be building a new house next year.
What do you think? Do you think the Delta Tau Delta fraternity should get another extension?
