Fire Ravages Recycling Plant Property | F.E. Moran Fire Protection

Eliot, Maine -- A recycling plant fire ignited in Maine and grew to two-alarms.  It took 60 firefighters, 7,500 feet of hose, and six pumper trucks to fight the fire.  When firefighters arrived to the scene, the building was already fully involved.

"There wasn't a thing inside the building that wasn't fully involved," said Kittery Fire Chief Dave O'Brien.

The recycling plant was in a rural area, requiring more firefighting equipment to meet water supply needs.  "It's rural firefighting at its best," said O'Brien.  The water pumps took water from the Sturgeon Creek, a quarter mile away, and delivered it to the pump truck.

"We're pumping about 1,500 to 2,000 gallons a minute to the fire," O'Brien said.  The nearest water supply was depleted quickly.

Later in the day, as firefighters worked to fight the fire a foam truck was added to the arsenal.

All recycling center employees were accounted for.

"At this point we have no idea what started the fire.  We're expecting it's an unintentional fire," said Eliot Fire Chief Jay Muzeroll.
