fire sprinkler contracor IllinoisEdwardsville, IL -- The mayor of Edwardsville, Hal Patton, has honored Central Illinois native Brittany Evans and four friends from Southern Illinois University after they stopped to save a family from a fire.

The group of students were driving at 1am, and saw a house on fire.  They stopped their car and reacted fast.

"A lot of people have asked if we would do it again, and yeah, we would.  A police officer told us two more minutes and it wouldn't have been a good outcome," said Brittany Evans.

Evans and a friend called 9-1-1 while two others pounded on the door until a little girl woke up.  "She said, 'I'm not supposed to open the door for strangers,' but they said she needed to open the door or back up because they were going to kick it in," Patton said.

The family and pets all escaped unharmed, thanks to the heroics of the students.
