Explosion that Killed Family Ruled Arson

Northfield Center Township, OH -- An explosion that killed a family of four in Ohio on Monday night has been ruled an arson.

"If there was someone walking around out there setting fires and killing people, we would have a responsibility to tell people that," said Northfield Center Township Fire Chief Frank Risko.  "That's not what happened."

The explosion and fire killed 43 year old Jeffrey Mather; his wife, 42 year old Cynthia; and their two daughters 12 year old Alyson and 8 year old Ruthie.  The daughters and wife were found in the front hallway and Jeffrey was found in the rear.

Testing concluded that the explosion was not gas related.  "Everybody that night knew it wasn't natural gas," said town trustee Paul Buescher.  "A natural gas explosion would have taken the entire house out."
