Fire displaced 28 Highland Park residents after a blaze from a party store traveled through an apartment complex Thursday night.
Highland Park Fire Chief Derek Hillman said the 10:30 p.m. blaze displaced 17 adults and 11 children from the building at 10 Ferris Street. They are now being aided by the American Red Cross.
"It started in the party store on the first floor and extended to the second and third floor," Hillman said. "One lady was rescued by the fire department. She was trapped by the smoke; she couldn't get out. They carried her out, down the hallway and down a stairwell."
She and a wheelchair-bound man trapped on the other side of the building were treated by EMS crews on the scene. No one else was hurt.
The fire caused severe damage to one wing of the three-wing building, Hillman added. The cause remains under investigation.
