1 Killed, 15 Hurt in New Years Eve Fire
Everett, WA -- A New Years Eve apartment complex fire went to 3-alarms, killing one and injuring fifteen people.
At 7:10pm, a mattress fire was reported to fire crews. The building did not have fire sprinklers, allowing the fire to spread quickly. As soon as firefighters arrived, they called a second alarm and soon afterwards a third alarm.
"The building was not equipped with a fire sprinkler system, and the fire was able to travel into the attic and spread quickly through the building," said Assistant Fire Marshal Eric Hicks.
Firefighters and emergency crews treated fifteen people ages 5 to 60 years old for injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to burns to falls from escaping through windows. One person was killed.
At least 100 people have been displaced and the American Red Cross is working to assist.
Crews worked all of New Years Eve into New Years Day to extinguish the fire.
